Committed to Safety Colonial Pipeline transports more barrels of refined petroleum products more miles than any other pipeline in the world. Colonial’s is committed to operating its pipeline system safely, reliably and efficiently. Numerous safety measures are taken by Colonial to protect the public and the environment. In addition, Colonial also complies with industry standards and practices set by the American Petroleum Institute, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the National Fire Association, and other industry groups. Viewed from the impact on human life, there is no safer mode for transporting liquid petroleum than via pipeline. In 2007, the National Transportation Safety Board recorded 43,193 transportation-related fatalities. Of these fatal accidents, 802 involved medium and heavy trucks, 808 involved railroads, and 24 involved commercial marine carries. Of the four fatalities involving liquid pipelines, none resulted from Colonial Pipeline operations.
