Safety Matters

Safety matters at Colonial Pipeline. By operating safely, we protect the public and the environment, as well as our own workforce. Safety is also good business, keeping our pipelines running efficiently and maintaining the confidence of our customers, our regulators, the public and communities where we live and work. That makes safety a good investment for all of Colonial's stakeholders.

Colonial was recognized by the pipeline industry for its 2008 efforts to protect the safety of the public, our workforce and the environment.
Colonial had the safest driving record among large pipeline companies. We drove 6.3 million miles in 2008 and were involved in six accidents. Fortunately none were serious, although every accident has the potential to be life-changing.

Why does a pipeline company focus so intently on driving safely? For several reasons. Driving is likely the most dangerous activity Americans undertake every day. Setting the bar high on driving safety helps Colonial keep the bar high on every aspect of our work, from preventing spills to ensuring the fuels we deliver are of the highest quality.

Colonial also was recognized for preventing on-the-job injuries, the kind that force a worker to miss a day of work while recuperating. In fact, in March of 2009, Colonial celebrated 9 million hours of work without a lost-time injury. That represents about 9 years of working safely, a period during which Colonial delivered more than 30 billion gallons of fuel each year!

Landowners living along pipeline rights-of-way are one of the best protections companies like Colonial have against unauthorized digging projects that can damage pipelines and cause spills. Excavators must obtain permission to dig, to ensure they're not digging over a pipeline or other buried utility.
