Colonial Pipeline Company’s mission of “America’s Energy Lifeline” challenges us to continually meet our customers’ needs in today’s ever-changing marketplace. The following list contains some of the recently completed connections that have expanded Colonial’s system as we help our customers grow. Watch for new projects and new additions that help Colonial better serve our customers.

Dulles Expansion

Clear Skies

Colonial modified 16 facilities, including Gulf Coast injection points, and tank farms and delivery facilities from Texas to Virginia, in order to successfully ship Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel starting in 2006. ULSD, a more environmentally friendly diesel fuel, is used by most on-highway trucks. The challenge for Colonial was transporting a diesel fuel of no more than 15 parts per million sulfur in the same pipeline that carries high-sulfur products like jet fuel and home heating oil. The modifications included new breakout tanks at Atlanta and Greensboro; replacing more than 400 valves with new, positive-sealing valves; piping modifications to remove “dead leg” segments; and installation of new interface detection equipment at key locations across the system.

Bengal Pipeline

Bengal Pipeline is a joint venture between Colonial Pipeline and Shell Pipeline. The pipeline originates in Norco, La., and terminates at the existing Colonial/Shell tank farm in Baton Rouge. The multi-product pipeline serves the Motiva and Valero refineries in Norco, Marathon’s refinery in Garyville, and via a previously existing pipeline that connects Motiva’s refinery in Convent to the Colonial/Shell tank farm in Baton Rouge. Bengal’s first barrel shipped in May 2006.

Dulles Expansion

The Dulles Expansion Project established a direct connection from Colonial’s Line 3 mainline to Washington Dulles International Airport in order to meet the airport’s growing fuel supply needs. The new pipeline delivers jet fuel to a new, 579,000-barrel settling tank farm constructed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA). The new line replaces a smaller line and will help ensure the airport’s supply needs are met well into the future.
